LOUPS Social Event - Memories ...
'Memories: true reflections or fantastical creations?'
A talk by Dr. Alan Pechey, 1st November 2017, from 6pm (Talk begins at 7pm).
This social event combines a talk and social drinks where you can meet other Open University Psychology students in the London Region both before and after the talk.
Our memories define us both as individuals and as human beings. But what exactly is memory? As a species we are extremely adaptable to changing circumstances, as our behaviour is much more governed by learning from experience than it is by pre-programming. But where does the boundary lie between our conscious memories and automatic influences? And how accurate are these memories? To what extent are our conscious memories constructions of our imagination rather than reflections of what actually happened?
We are delighted to have Dr Alan Pechey giving this talk. Alan has tutored for over 25 years on OU child development and cognitive psychology courses and is a popular tutor at residential Schools and OUPS Weekends. He has an MA in cognitive development and a PhD (looking at human memory) from Cambridge University. Aside from his OU teaching, he worked for many years as a consultant in Organisational Psychology; advising organisations (e.g. Barclaycard, Scotland Yard, local government) on how to adapt to new technology; how to change work practices and how to present information more effectively.
This is a great opportunity to socialise with other OU psychology students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
A flier for the event will be available soon.
