LOUPS Social Event - Mindreading
'The science and the magic of mindreading'
A talk by Dr. Graham Edgar, 2nd November 2016, from 6pm (Talk begins at 7pm).
This social event combines a talk and social drinks where you can meet other Open University Psychology students in the London Region both before and after the talk.
As a psychologist, one of the most common questions is, ‘Can you read my mind?’ Well, while psychologists (mostly disguised as neuroscientists) are making slow-but-steady progress in mind-reading, magicians have apparently been able to mind-read with some skill for many years. This talk will consider (and possibly even demonstrate) the contrasting approaches to mind-reading taken by magicians and neuroscientists, the overlaps between them, and what it all means in real life. There will be some brief (illusory!) nudity.
We are delighted to have Dr Graham Edgar giving this talk. Graham has been a tutor with the OU for many years and is a regular contributor to OUPS weekends. He was an author of the Perception & Attention chapter in DSE212. He is also Reader in Psychology at the University of Gloucester where he works in the general area of cognitive psychology, with particular interests in the areas of perception and situation awareness (SA). Current research includes studies of driver behaviour and the development of techniques for measuring SA, including measuring brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG).
This is a great opportunity to socialise with other OU psychology students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
