LOUPS Course Overview Day for the courses DE100 and E219

Attendees at this intensive day receive an overview of one of the above courses. The material for each covers the entire course and attending these sessions gives students the advantage of understanding the framework of the course and being mindful of what to concentrate on for the TMAs and exam. The day is aimed at students already studying the course irrespective of whether they are ahead or behind in the coursework schedule!

Students say that these days are inspirational and packed with content, making them excellent value in terms of time and money.

Registration will take place from 9.30am. Lectures will start at 10.00 am. The day will finish at approximately 4.30pm.

Tutors and programmes

There will be 2 courses running at the venue for the day and you can meet other students and tutors from these courses.

DE100 and Study Skills Overview Day: Professor Frederick Toates is Professor of Biological Psychology at the Open University, where he has over 37 years experience of teaching and tutoring. An author on many of the OU Psychology courses, including DE100, his published books include Biological Psychology (3rd edition, Pearson Education, Harlow), which forms a popular and recommended text in a number of universities throughout the world, a book on B.F. Skinner and his most recently published book, 'How Sexual Desire Works: The Enigmatic Urge'.   Fred has taught undergraduate classes not only in the UK but also in Moldova, Romania, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the USA.

The four themes examined throughout the day are:

  • Lessons from Part 1
  • Lessons from Part 2
  • Lessons from Part 3
  • Investigating Methods - understanding different research approaches

Level 1 modules are designed to offer students the opportunity to build up crucial study skills that will help achieve higher grades at Level 2 and Level 3. This is the time when, as a student, you have the chance to practice your academic writing skills and get to grips with basic psychological concepts. All your efforts at Level 1 will pay off later in your degree path when higher level modules will count towards your degree classification. To help build up your study skills, Sessions 1 to 3 will incorporate advice on general topics such as essay writing skills (focusing on the essay question, concise writing, critical analysis) and referencing.

Please note that no advice on specific TMAs will be given.

This event is also beneficial for students who are not currently studying the module but who are thinking of registering for the January presentation.

E219: Dr Alan Pechey is an extremely engaging speaker and is a very experienced OU psychology tutor. He currently tutors on E219 and DE200 (having previously been a tutor for over 25 years on OU child development and cognitive psychology courses) and is a popular tutor at residential Schools and OUPS Weekends. He has a masters (in cognitive development) and a PhD (looking at human memory) from Cambridge University.

The day comprises four sessions. Subject areas are:

  • Cognitive Development [Developing internal representations of the world]
  • Personal Development [Development of identity and emotional control]
  • Social Development [Learning to communicate and relate]
  • Doing well in E219 - TMAs and EMA.

Printed material

Please note that this is a paperless event.

To be more environmentally friendly and to help manage our prices we will make electronic copies of any relevant handouts available to all registered attendees, either in advance so that those who need printed versions have plenty of time to organise these, or shortly after the event if the tutor has decided that this is more appropriate for their lecture. These are for attendees' personal use and may not be shared.

We'd like to thank our tutors for working to ensure that their presentations do not contain material to which they do not have copyright and for making them available in this way. And in advance, we'd like to thank all of you who support us in actively contributing toward a paperless environment and saving a few trees along the way !
