Description

Tutor: Simon J. Davies

However you feel about statistics and writing up psychology experiments, you will need to tackle this at some point in your degree, and an understanding of statistical techniques may well help you to get your first job if you want to work in psychology. The basic concepts behind statistics are easier to understand than you might think, and the OUPS North Statistics Day School will help you to tackle your statistics assignments with more confidence. It is ideal for students on DE200 Investigating Psychology 2 or DD303 Cognitive Psychology, or any other undergraduate-level psychology course involving statistics-based assignments.

OU tutor Simon J. Davies will be explaining what experimental research methods and statistics are and why we use them, looking at the basic concepts behind experimental design, probability and statistical significance. He will introduce students to the statistics package SPSS, including data entry and producing graphs and descriptive statistics – this will be shown on-screen by the tutor only, and students will not be required to work on SPSS on an individual computer. Simon will also take students through two basic statistical tests: the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
